Waves of Rote
Rote Island is a surfer’s paradise, from mellow beach breaks to world-class barrels. Whether you’re chasing your first wave or a perfect 300-meter left, Rote delivers uncrowded line-ups, crystal-clear water, and surf for every level.

01
Boa
Bo’a is one of Rote’s most iconic waves, offering everything from heavy, barreling perfection to long, playful walls, all depending on swell, wind, and tide.
At low tide with solid swell, it turns into a spitting, fast-breaking beast, peeling down the reef in a powerful, hollow line. As the tide pushes in, the wave bends into the deeper channel, becoming longer and more rippable, ideal for turns and flow.
02
Dana
Just off the horizon from Bo’a Vida lies Pulau Dana — a remote and mystical island that holds a beautifully shaped left-hander. When a solid swell lines up from the right direction, Dana delivers long, mellow takeoffs that end with unforgettable barrels over the inside reef.
Nearby, the north side of the reef also throws up a fun, easier right-hander — perfect for a day trip. A boat from Bo’a Vida can take you there.

03
T-Land
Indonesia’s longest left.
T-Land is the crown jewel of Rote’s surf scene. A long, machine-like left that peels endlessly across multiple peaks, it’s often compared to G-Land or a more mellow version of Padang Padang, but with fewer crowds.
It holds big swell well and offers long, rippable walls with the occasional almond barrel section. While it’s the busiest wave on the island, the multiple takeoff zones spread surfers out. Reach it by water taxi or prepare for a serious paddle.
04
Oeseli
Oeseli is a rare gem that only comes alive with a solid swell and perfect conditions. When it’s on, this left-hander produces heavy, hollow barrels across a shallow, intimidating reef.
It’s a wave for advanced surfers only, fast, powerful, and unforgiving, but the payoff is pure magic if you catch it on a good day.

05
Do´o
Located on the east tip of the uninhabited Do’o Island, this right-hander wraps around the reef like a coiled spring. When it fires, Do’o throws long, powerful barrels over a shallow inside section, making it a playground for expert surfers seeking solitude and adrenaline.
Access requires a boat and commitment.
06
Sucky Mamas (Suckies)
Named by early surf explorers who couldn’t pronounce the nearby village, Sucky Mamas is a heavy, offshore slab about 1km out to sea. It breaks over deep reef with a clean channel, making it boat-access only.
Expect big, round barrels and a strong rip that can pull you into the lineup fast. Not for the faint-hearted, but absolutely thrilling when it’s on.

07
Squealers
Not all of Rote is heavy surf and hollow waves. Just north of Nembrala Harbor, Squealers is a soft, rolling beach break that’s perfect for beginners and local groms. It breaks on higher tide, over deeper water, and is ideal for learning on mini mals or soft tops.
Safe, consistent, and fun — it’s the go-to spot for first-timers and chill sessions.
